What is the definition of conflict?

There are two different types of conflicts: internal and external. If you are to look these words up in the literature textbook glossary, you will find the following:

Internal- An internal conflict is a conflict present only in one's mind because of feelings, thoughts or beliefs.

External- An external conflict is a conflict in which two or more persons are involved. It is more of a physical conflict.

Examples: An example of an internal conflict could be when (in Chapter 1) Bilbo is trying to decide whether he should or shouldn´t go on the adventure with the dwarves and Gandalf.
An example of an external conflict could be when (in Chapter 4) The goblins are hitting and whipping the dwarves and Bilbo.
